This one is for all the little doggies who aren't too fond of the new Asus graphics drivers having built in Cheats. It is an online petition to Asus, asking them to "completely rid the internet of these drivers. This includes deleting them from download sites, mirrors, and forcing any sites containing the drivers to remove them, as well as doing everything in their power to make the drivers non functional."
Anyway, if anyone is interested, here's the link: http://www.petitiononline.com/badasus/petition.html
Here's hoping it works.... |

I'm not one to poop on your parade . . . .
but there's no way Asus could stuff the rabbit back into the hat
i'll give you a loosely related example:
the RIAA/ and the big 5 recording studios have spent an estimeted billion dollars over the last 3 years trying to stuff "digital music downloads" back into the "hat"
and downloading is more prevalent then ever
i'm not saying this because i want to stop your petition, but i think you might want to amend the petition so that it was something they could actually accomplish
I have some ideas if you want to hear them |

It isn't my petition (I found the link at PlanetHalfLife), but there is an e-mail address for the author on the site. I personally would like to see this sort of BS stopped, but as long as there are bugs and cheats to be found, I suppose there will be cheaters as well.
Anyways, I accept the critisism, and even though it can't stop the current drivers, I hope the petition makes Asus sit up and listen, and stop making this sort of driver. |

if you think about it though
they probably never meant to release the 'see thru" drivers
i'm sure it was some geek feature they included when they were trying to create a kick ass demo for CeBit or Comdex . . somebody wrote the wireframe modeling sequence to speed up render times to make the demo more impressive
and somebody else accidentally let the drivers slip out . . without knowing the contents/consequences
(my guess would be some lugnut from the paper pushing side of the house decided he'd impress his brother-in-law or the corn-cob who lives next to him . . without realizing what he had when he gave this guy the drivers)
the only thing they can really do now, is release bios updates that won't recognize the patched/cheat drivers . . and trickle them out as they can
people will get around this by getting a copy of an old bios and re-flashing
so the only thing that will get rid of the problem is making future products not recognize the cheat-drivers . . and waiting for the existing products to become obsolete |

Poor judgement, someone's mistake, whatever... The damage has been done and there's no easy fix. But according to Russell "Essobie" O'Henly, http://www.planetquake.com/features/rantsnraves/rnr-01-05-13_a.shtml if news of this problem had never been posted, then this problem would not exist! So no news is good news? Ignorance is bliss? Hummm...

I dunno if i'd agree with that Ed,
I had heard about the asus driver cheats atleast a week before i saw the first story over at [H].
just like i heard about "aimbots" and the computer "player" hack for UT just from getting on a server and listening to people complain (because they were losing and blaming their failure on someone else's "cheating")
I had heard about the "clock generator" cheat way back as far as "Dungeon Keeper" and just assumed my knowledge of the hack translated into "everybody knows about that"
I agree that news sites tend to make "too much" of these stories when they are posted. but i'm not sure i can agree that it's the news sites fault that the whole world knows about a hack. the only blame they might shoulder is for the "AOL" caliber user who has had the game a week, it took them that long to get the damn thing installed . . so they decide to cheat "out of the box": without ever learning the game |

I didn't post that because I agree with him, just the opposite. I want the news. I wouldn't want to remain ignorant. What O'Henly was saying was that not posting news of a cheat would stop cheating, which is rediculous! I guess I failed to make my point clear here in the forum and also in the comments section.

OH . . Gotcha !
well, i'm just expressing my take on it . . and i did agree with one part of that rant over at PQ anyway.
it's "news" when you say: "hey there's a new issue you should watch out for when you're playing such and such game"
it's F*ed up when you say: "Hey . . i just found out how you can cheat at such and such and ruin everybody's game . . here's HOW to be a lou Z-her"

Exactly! It's one thing to say that there is such and such of a cheat being used. That's news and that's all I mean when I say news. But it's totally different if you print a "how to". No web site with any integrity would give a step-by-step on how to cheat.

I understood your comment post on it. Kinda laughed actually, but I understood it.
