Original OS was Win98 and installed Win2K on 2nd Hard Drive to dual boot with Win98. I want to remove the Win98 installation, what files do I need to move from the C: drive (Win98) to the Win2K drive so I can boot up to Win2K?
Thanks

i'm not sure this is what you're asking . . but for the most part you should just be able to delete C:\windows
and if your program_files directories are seperate for both os's (ie there is a program files direct on the same drive as d:\winnt)
then you should be able to delete anything on C: that wasn't being used by win2k |

Here is what I want to do. I want to format c: and install Linux, and dual boot with Mandrake and Win2K. But on the drive where Win2K is located there are no files in the root directory. I have 3 folders and no files. I think I need Autoexec.bat config.sys from the Win98 drive. I will probably check out the Linux Win2K review on LWD. But I was just checking for a quick answer. THANKS

Whoa stop right there KingKash, Do NOT format C yet or you will lose Win2K utterly and completely...unless you have a rescue disk made but even then I'm not guarenteeing anything.
There are definitely some files you'll need to get off of C before formatting and loading Linux. Boot.ini, NTLDR are the first 2 that come to mind but there maybe others...I'm in Mandrake right now so I can't look to see if there are any others but I'll post later when I rebooot to let you know...I would copy the files you need from the C drive to your win2K partition(the root of it) once you are confident you have everything, then format C but don't load Linux yet.
After formatting C boot off the Win2K CD and choose a repair of the OS...this will reconfigure Win2K and the MBR to load from the Win2K partition. Once you are successfully booting into Win2K then you can go and load linux...remember to remove the partition that was C or Win2K will just reinstall the boot files and MBR to it unless it's a partition that it doesn't recognize but if it is FAT/FAT32 you can bet the files will reappear.

Ok KingKash here you go:
The list of files you'll need just to be safe, and we all want to be safe don't we?
- arcldr.exe
- arcsetup.exe
- boot.ini
- ntdetect.com
Now take a look at where your pagefile.sys is located and make sure that is not on C either. If so move it. Check log file locations also, we don't want Win2K crashing because it can't write to a log file do we.
Now the only thing I'm worried about is when you remove the Win9x partition Win2K might get a little upset because it thinks a FAT/FAT32 partition is supposed to be there and it will not. You might experience a long boot time because it will be looking for it and of course it won't be there. If that happens I'm not sure how to fix it. There's probably a place where that information is stored. One possible way around it would be to remove the parition from within Win2K, that way it will know there is nothing there to see. That is of course after you fix Win2K and if all of this even works. Good luck...you'll need it!
