Call me daft, but I didn't manage to figure out this one:
Would the hack still work if I turned on file protection again afterwards, or would the protection detect an anomaly in the file and blow my machine up?

It will not still work. It will replace the ntoskrnl.exe with the original one. That's why I want to know how to do it without turning WFP off.

tx Blood... The "sample" image that I posted in the article looks pretty cool when you use it to boot. Don't have my digi camera with me right now or I'd post a pic of it. The line that normally moves in the boot screen (the blue one) is right in the middle of the flames.....
Looks kinda funky.

Just to let you all know I've 'hacked' the phreakin' file ...
With SFC disabled I updated NTOSKRNL.EXEin two folders:
C:\WinNT\System32
C:\WinNT\System32\DllCache
Enabled SFC and it my personalized pic keeps poping up at startup [8D]

I made a couple logos for my own machine (and therefore have my machine name on them). I also did edited the ScanDisk screen that comes up (resource 7 in NTOSKRNL.exe). Check it out:
Here's the Boot Screen:
And here's the Scandisk screen:
I thought the whole thing was pretty cool myself....but they have my machine name on them so they really won't do much good to others.....I just thought I'd show off a little :)
